A practical approach to solar

Good solar starts with the right advice.

Pure Electrical & Air installs solar across the Perth metro area for residential and commercial properties. We install new systems, upgrade existing ones and replace ageing panels and inverters.

Before recommending anything, our electricians look at how much electricity you actually use, the roof space you have and what you want solar to do for you.

The goal is straightforward: a quality solar system that suits the property, performs well and cuts how much power you buy from the grid.

What we can help with

Solar panel installation and ongoing electrical support.

Our electricians can help with a first installation or assess an existing system and explain what makes sense.

There is a lot of choice in the solar market. Different panels, inverters, system sizes and price points make comparing quotes harder than it should be.

We keep it simple. Our team assesses the property, talks through your electricity use and recommends a system that matches what you actually need.

01

New solar installations

Installing solar for the first time? We supply and install the complete system for your home or business, including panels, inverter and all the electrical work behind it.

02

Solar system upgrades

An older system may no longer cover your current electricity use. We can assess the existing setup and look at options for upgrading it or increasing capacity.

03

Solar panel replacement

Damaged, ageing or underperforming panels drag down the output of the whole system. We inspect existing panels and replace them where needed.

04

Inverter replacement

A failed inverter does not mean you need a new solar system. We test the existing setup and replace just the inverter where that is the practical option.

05

Solar repairs and maintenance

If your system is producing less than it used to, showing an error, or just does not seem right, our electricians can inspect it and find out why.

We assess the electrical setup as well as the panels and inverter, so potential switchboard work can be identified early.

Why choose Pure Electrical & Air

The people doing the work matter.

Solar is an electrical system first. Our installations are carried out by our own employees, so you deal directly with the business doing the work.

We look at the whole electrical setup, including switchboards and future plans for battery storage or EV charging, rather than treating the job as panels on a roof.

If replacing an inverter makes more sense than replacing the whole system, we'll explain why.

Our electrical approach

Why have an electrician install your solar

Solar is an electrical system first.

Pure Electrical & Air is a Perth electrical contractor. We look at the whole electrical setup rather than treating the job as panels on a roof. That matters more than it sounds, because the parts of a solar install that go wrong are usually electrical ones.

If something goes wrong, you know who is responsible

Western Power tells people choosing an installer to ask one question in particular: if something goes wrong, who pays to fix it?

It is a fair question and it is often hard to get a straight answer, because a lot of solar is sold by one company and installed by another. When the install is subcontracted, responsibility gets split between the retailer who sold it, the subcontractor who fitted it and the manufacturer who made it.

Our installations are carried out by our own employees. You are dealing with the business that did the work, and that does not change after the invoice is paid.

Switchboard and meter box work handled in house

Plenty of solar installs stall because the switchboard needs work before anything can be connected. Older boards, ceramic fuses, no main switch, no RCD protection on the circuits. We do that work ourselves rather than sending you to find another electrician partway through the job, and it gets picked up during the assessment rather than appearing as a variation after you have signed.

One team for solar, batteries, EV charging and air conditioning

Because we are not only a solar company, we can look at the whole picture. If you are thinking about a solar battery, an EV charger or air conditioning down the track, that changes how the system should be designed now. Better to allow for it than retrofit around it later.

Practical advice, not a bigger sale

If you do not need a bigger system, we will say so. If replacing the inverter makes more sense than replacing everything, we will tell you that too.

System design

Choosing the right solar system.

The cheapest solar package is rarely the cheapest option over the life of the system.

Panels, inverters and system size all affect performance and cost. We consider how much power you use during daylight, your roof space and whether battery storage might make sense later.

Grid approval and export limits can also affect what can be installed at your address. We'll discuss these requirements during the planning process.

Planning your system

Choosing the right solar system

The cheapest solar package is rarely the cheapest option over the life of the system.

Panels and inverters vary considerably in quality, efficiency, warranty cover and expected lifespan. Installation quality counts for just as much. A good system has to be properly designed and properly installed in the first place.

When we assess a property we look at:

  • Current electricity consumption
  • How much of it happens during daylight hours
  • Available roof space, orientation and shading
  • Panel and inverter quality
  • System size and inverter sizing
  • Future battery storage or EV charging
  • Product and manufacturer warranties
  • Budget and expected payback period

There is no single best solar panel for every property. The more useful question is which combination of panels, inverter and system size gives you good value for what you are trying to achieve.

We use quality solar equipment from established manufacturers with strong warranties and local support behind their products, so warranty claims are something you can actually act on years later.

Property types

Residential and commercial solar

Residential solar installation

Solar gives Perth homeowners a way to generate more of their own electricity during the day and lean less on grid power.

Bigger is not automatically better. The right system depends on how much you use, when you use it and how much suitable roof space you have. Future plans matter too. If a battery or EV charger is on the cards, it is worth designing for that now.

Commercial solar installation

For a lot of businesses, most electricity use happens during daylight hours, which is exactly when solar produces. That makes commercial solar particularly worthwhile.

We install systems for commercial properties across Perth, including offices, workshops, warehouses and other business premises. A well sized system cuts the power bought from the grid during operating hours and brings down ongoing energy bills.

Battery storage

Adding battery storage to your solar system

Solar panels generate electricity while the sun is up. A battery gives you somewhere to put the energy you are not using at the time, so you can draw on it later in the day when production drops.

Battery storage can be included in a new installation, and batteries can be added to many existing systems. Compatibility depends on the current inverter and how the existing system was set up.

Our electricians can inspect your setup and tell you what your options are.

Energy savings

Solar power and your electricity bills

Most people looking at solar want to know one thing: what will it actually save?

That depends heavily on how you use electricity.

Your panels generate power during daylight hours. Power generated and used in the property at the same time directly reduces what you buy from the grid. That is where most of the saving comes from.

If the system produces more than you are using, the excess solar energy can be exported to the grid. Eligible WA households may receive a payment for exported electricity through the Distributed Energy Buyback Scheme (DEBS). Buyback rates are set by the WA Government and reviewed periodically, so treat any rate you see advertised as a point in time rather than a fixture.

A solar battery changes the equation again by storing some of that excess for later.

This is why system size should not be based purely on how many panels fit on the roof. Your electricity use, the system cost and the realistic energy savings all need to be weighed together. A properly sized system should give you a sensible return rather than simply being the biggest thing available.

Western Australian connections

Grid approval, inverter sizing and export limits in WA

This is the part most quotes gloss over, and it is where a lot of confusion starts.

Panel size and inverter size are different numbers

A common Perth setup is around 6.6 kW of panels paired with a 5 kW inverter. The panel figure is the size of the array on your roof. The inverter figure is what governs your connection and your eligibility for the buyback scheme.

What you can export depends on your address

Export limits are set by Western Power under its connection requirements, and they vary by connection point. Some parts of the network are constrained and carry lower limits. There is no single number that applies to every Perth property, which is why we check before quoting rather than after.

Approvals take time

Your system needs approval before it can be connected, and timeframes depend on Western Power and Synergy processing rather than on us. We handle the applications and keep you posted on where things are up to.

Changing the system later has consequences

If you expand a system or change the inverter afterwards, that needs a change of system application and it can affect your buyback eligibility. Worth knowing before you install something you intend to grow into.

A meter upgrade or reprogram may also be needed before connection, and that cost usually sits with the property owner.

The longer view

Solar, emissions and the longer view

Every unit of electricity your system generates and you use is a unit that does not come from the grid. Across a system's working life that adds up, both on your bill and in the emissions behind the power you would otherwise have bought.

For most Perth property owners the financial case is what drives the decision. The reduction in greenhouse gas emissions is a real benefit on top of it, not the reason to sign.

Licensing and accreditation

Accreditation, licensing and who does the work

Worth knowing how to check any installer, including us.

Accreditation changed in 2024. Solar Accreditation Australia replaced the Clean Energy Council as the accreditation body for new and renewing accreditation from 29 February 2024. SAA accreditation is what makes a system eligible for Small-scale Technology Certificates, which is how the federal discount reaches you. A lot of installer websites, and some official guidance, still say to check for CEC accreditation. If you are comparing quotes, ask for the SAA accreditation number and the name it is held under.

An electrical licence is separate. Grid connected solar also requires an unrestricted electrical licence in the state of installation. The two are not interchangeable, and an installer needs both.

Ask your installer to provide their current electrical contractor licence and the accreditation details of the person responsible for the installation. Pure Electrical & Air can provide relevant credentials during the quoting process.

Helpful answers

Solar installation questions, answered.

How much does solar installation cost in Perth?

There is no single useful price. Cost depends on system size, the panels and inverter used, the property itself and whether extra electrical work is needed. We assess the property and quote on the system you actually need.

What size solar system do I need?

It depends on your consumption, how much of it falls during daylight, your roof space and what you want the system to achieve. Looking at your actual electricity use is far more useful than fitting as many panels as will physically go on.

Is 10kW of solar enough to run a house?

For most Perth homes a 10 kW system is more than enough to cover daytime use, but "running a house" is the wrong frame. Solar offsets what you use while the sun is up. Covering evening and overnight use means either buying from the grid or adding a battery. The useful question is how much of your usage happens during daylight.

Do I need approval from Western Power or Synergy?

Yes. Grid connected systems need approval before connection, and your export limit is set by Western Power based on your connection point. We handle the applications. Timeframes depend on their processing.

Will my switchboard need upgrading?

Sometimes. Older boards, ceramic fuses or missing RCD protection often need attention before a system can be connected. We check this during the assessment so it is priced in rather than sprung on you later.

Can I upgrade my existing solar system?

Often, yes. We look at the age and condition of the panels, inverter capacity, roof space and how the system was configured, then tell you whether upgrading or replacing makes more sense.

Can you replace a solar inverter without replacing the panels?

Usually, yes. If the panels are in good condition and compatible with a suitable replacement inverter, there is often no reason to replace everything. We inspect before recommending.

Can I add a battery to my existing solar panels?

Many existing systems can take battery storage, though it depends on the inverter and how the system was set up. We can check your setup and tell you the options. Note that changing an existing system can affect your buyback eligibility, so it is worth checking that before committing.

What happens to the solar power I do not use?

Excess energy is generally exported to the grid, and eligible WA households may receive a payment for it under the Distributed Energy Buyback Scheme. With a compatible battery, some of that excess can be stored and used later instead.

How long do solar panels last?

Panels are built for long service, but output declines gradually with age. Expected performance and warranty periods vary between manufacturers, which is one reason to look past the headline price at product quality and warranty cover.

Are solar rebates available in Western Australia?

Rebates and incentives depend on the type of installation and the programs running at the time. Eligibility and amounts change, so check current requirements when you are ready to install rather than relying on an advertised figure from last year.

Is solar worth installing in Perth?

For many properties, yes. The numbers come down to how much electricity you use, when you use it, what the system costs and how much of the generation you can use directly. Rather than guessing, we can look at your usage and recommend accordingly.
